PSMA PET/CT scan
What Is A PSMA Scan?
A PSMA (Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen) scan is a type of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan used to evaluate for metastatic disease in newly diagnosed higher risk prostate cancer, and to evaluate for disease recurrence after prior prostate cancer treatment.
How Does It Work?
The PSMA PET/CT scan offers dramatically improved accuracy compared to older imaging techniques like conventional CT and bone scans. Unlike traditional scans that look only at structures, the PSMA scan highlights the cancer cells themselves, making even small deposits of the disease visible.
This is possible because our PSMA scanner uses a safe, small amount of a radioactive tracer that binds directly to the PSMA protein, which is found in high quantities on prostate cancer cells. These scans help doctors stage cancer, detect recurrence after treatment, and/or guide targeted therapies, making it a crucial tool for personalized prostate cancer care.
The Benefits Of Our PSMA Scans
There are two important differences:
Focused Radiology Expertise
A scan is only as good as the radiologist interpreting it and our radiologists are highly experienced in reading PET/CT scans for prostate cancer. That makes a really big difference when it comes to your test results and determining any diagnosis or treatment plans you may need.
Fast Turnaround for Results
Nobody likes waiting around for results. Our goal is to discuss them with you as soon as possible. We never rush the process of reading your images. But because everyone on your team has a focus in urology, they are able to read and evaluate your images with a much higher degree of precision and knowledge. Which means you can get your results back, not only faster, but with more reliable findings.

What To Expect At Your PSMA Scan Appointment
Your safety and comfort are our priority the entire time. Your entire team will work closely together to provide a seamless, coordinated process from start to finish.
BEFORE
You do not need to prepare for your PSMA test other than to wear comfortable clothing, ideally sweatpants.
DURING
After checking in, we will have you sit in a comfortable chair and administer a safe, small injection into your arm. It will take about 60 minutes for this injection to circulate and be absorbed by your body’s cells. This is a great time to relax and listen to music or do some reading. After that, we will have you lie on a comfortable, padded table that slides into the scanner. The scan itself takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
AFTER
After the exam, you are able to leave and don’t need a driver for the appointment. We encourage drinking plenty of water or juice.
