Associated Urological Specialists Leads The Way Again In Treatment Options for Prostate Cancer.

Associated Urological Specialists are proud to announce the successful completion of performing the first set of Sonablate HIFU cases for focal treatment of prostate cancer in Chicago and all of Illinois.

Sonablate HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) is an innovative therapy that AUS now offers that gives select patients the benefit of treatment for their prostate cancer with minimal risks of ED and incontinence that are often seen with other therapies. This is a huge upside to improving a lot of people’s quality of life.

As a minimally invasive prostate cancer treatment procedure, Sonablate HIFU can provide the preservation of sexual function and patients can go home the same day with no overnight stay. And according to their website, one key finding is in patients with non-metastatic low- intermediate prostate cancer, oncological outcomes over 8 years were similar between other more invasive treatment options.

Board-Certified Urologist Dr. Arpeet Shah, is the Director of the APP Program at AUS and lead the efforts to bring this as a viable option to offer outside of the university hospitals. “We see a lot of patients seeking these treatments at academic centers, but we are the first to bring it to the southern suburbs of Chicago in a community setting.” In other words, world-class prostate care, once only available from large healthcare institutions in some of the largest cities in the world, is now available in areas like Chicago Ridge, Orland Park, New Lenox, Evergreen Park, Joliet and Homewood, Illinois. Dr. Shah performed the first case at Advocate South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest, IL.

Katie Freeland, the Regional Sales Director for Sonablate, notes the historical perspective of this. “A big congrats to Dr. Shah being the first to make this happen,” she says, “and doing so within the Advocate Aurora System – not only in Chicago but all of Illinois. It was one of the first to be done in the entire Midwest.”

Currently, two other board-certified Urologists can perform the new, cutting-edge therapy. Dr. Rajesh Patel, President of AUS, and Dr. Aaron Berger, Chief Medical Officer & Director of Clinical Research, are also able to perform this therapy.

Dr. Patel highlights the significance of this milestone. “AUS is proud to introduce this cutting-edge, minimally invasive prostate cancer treatments to our community, bridging innovation with compassionate care.” He notes, “Many patients are seeking out targeted and focal therapy as treatment options for their malignancies.”

Two other Associated Urological Specialists, Dr. Mark Lyon and Dr. James Sylora were the first to do focal therapy for prostate cancer in 2020. At that time, AUS was the first and only private group in the Chicago area to offer this advanced urology technology to their patients.

Now with the addition of Sonablate HIFU, another first from AUS and it’s urologists, the quality of men’s healthcare in and around Chicagoland has risen again.
