Is a Vasectomy Best for You?

Is a Vasectomy the Best Form of Birth Control for You and Your Partner?

Having a vasectomy should be thought of as a permanent decision. So before you make this choice, be sure it’s what you want.

If you do choose vasectomy, you should have no doubts. We strongly recommend that you discuss it thoroughly with your partner or spouse before proceeding. We even encourage that they even join you at the initial consultation. We want you both comfortable enough with AUS, your Board-Certified Urologist, the facility and the procedure. We also encourage both of you to ask questions and get the answers you need.

Here are some reasons to consider and discuss:

Reasons why men SHOULD get a vasectomy

  • You would like to enjoy sex without worrying about pregnancy every time.
  • Your spouse or partner’s health would be threatened by a future pregnancy.
  • You do not want to risk passing on a genetic or hereditary disease or disability.
  • You and your partner do not want to (or cannot) use other kinds of birth control.
  • You want to save your partner from the surgery involved in having her tubes tied (tubal ligation).

Reasons why men should NOT get a vasectomy

  • You are young and may still consider having children one day.
  • You are being pressured by your spouse or partner.
  • You are in an unstable relationship or it is unlikely to last.
  • You are depressed, stressed, or have difficulty making important life decisions.
  • You are planning to change your mind and reverse it later.

Reversing a vasectomy can be complex, so make absolutely sure that you have considered all your options.

Schedule a vasectomy consultation

The first step is to get a consultation with one of our 17 board-certified urologists. They will take the time to answer all your questions and take you through what you can expect before and after the procedure. It’s a great time to ask any questions you may have. Don’t be afraid to ask about anything you’re wondering about – we’ve heard everything.

The consultation can be done discretely, either in person at any one of our offices or as a Telehealth appointment from the privacy and convenience of your home.

Although legally you may not be required to have the consent of your wife or partner, a vasectomy (or any contraceptive choice) should be best decided as a couple. This is one decision that you may not want to make on your own. We encourage your partner to be a part and participate in the consultation visit with you, so that you can both ask questions.

We know that most people are extremely busy with work and family life. And hey, there’s not many people who like making a bunch of trips to the doctor. Associated Urological Specialists (AUS) offers the option for having a consultation and a no scalpel and/or nitrous oxide vasectomy done in the same day. The consultation part can be done in person or by a Telehealth appointment, but obviously the procedure needs to be done at our office.
