Prostatectomy
The prostate gland is situated in the male pelvis, below the urinary bladder. It surrounds the urethra, which carries urine from the bladder to the penis. Prostatectomy is surgery to remove part or all of the prostate gland. This procedure is used to treat several conditions affecting the prostate. It's commonly used as treatment for BPH (Benign prostatic hyperplasia) and/or prostate cancer.
There are two types of prostatectomies.
Simple Prostatectomy
Simple prostatectomy to treat BPH does not remove the entire prostate. Instead, this procedure removes just the part of the prostate that's blocking the flow of urine. The surgery eases urinary symptoms and complications resulting from blocked urine flow.
Simple prostatectomy provides long-term relief of urinary symptoms due to an enlarged prostate. Although it's the most invasive procedure to treat an enlarged prostate, serious complications are rare. Most men who have the procedure generally don't need any follow-up treatment for their BPH.
Radical Prostatectomy
Radical prostatectomy is surgery to remove the entire prostate gland and surrounding lymph nodes to treat men with localized prostate cancer. A radical prostatectomy is ONLY used for prostate cancer. It may be used alone, or in conjunction with radiation, chemotherapy and hormone therapy.
Your urologist will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each, as well as your preferences, to determine which approach is best for you.
Surgeons of Excellence
Associated Urological Specialists have a number of exceptional surgeons, some of which recognized as either Top Docs or Top Surgeons in Illinois. Three have also been recognized as a Surgeon of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Surgery and Robotic Surgery with the hospital’s Center of Excellence accreditation programs.
The Procedure
Using the advanced da Vinci robotic surgical system, miniaturized robotic instruments are passed through several small keyhole incisions in the patient’s abdomen to allow the surgeon to remove parts of the prostate and nearby tissues with great precision. This is much less invasive than other conventional methods, which involves an abdominal incision that extends from the belly button to the pubic bone.
For most of the surgery, your surgeon is seated at a computer console and manipulates tiny wristed instruments that offer a range of motion far greater than the human wrist.

Benefits of Robotic Prostatectomy
The robotic system allows smaller and more-precise incisions. This approach enables nerve-sparing techniques that may preserve both sexual potency and continence in the appropriately selected person.
Compared with traditional open surgery, patients who undergo robotic-assisted prostatectomy experience:
- Less blood loss
- Less pain
- Reduced tissue trauma
- Shorter hospital stays
- Faster recovery times
Risks
In addition to the risks associated with any surgery, risks with prostatectomy include:
- Bleeding
- Urinary tract infection
- Urinary incontinence
- Erectile dysfunction
- Narrowing of the urethra or bladder neck
- Formation of cysts containing lymph (lymphocele)
